WAYLAND — The Washington boys’ track and field team tallied five individual personal-best times or throws at Thursday night’s Ekstrand Relays at WACO High School, and three relay teams ran season-best times.

“It was a very good night,” Washington head coach Steve Roth said. “It was awesome.”

Senior Austin Witt won the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 24.36 seconds, and he also took second place in the 100-meter dash in 12.07 seconds.

Sophomore Tommy Peterson won the shot put competition with a personal-best throw of 46 feet, 5.75 inches.

“When you win, like those events did, that’s a very good confidence builder for them,” Roth said. “That’s very satisfying for me.”

Sophomore Gage Redlinger, who was running the 400-meter hurdles for the first time, took second place in 59.57 seconds. Sophomore Jacob Hennigan finished third in a personal-best time of 59.86 seconds, and he also won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.97 seconds.

Junior Noah Lebsack, who is recovering from pneumonia, took second place in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best time of 53.34 seconds, and teammate Logan Moeller finished sixth in the race in 1:01.12.

Washington’s 4x200 relay team of Carl Sivels, Redlinger, Kyle Roder and Witt took first place in a season-best time of 1:35.23, and the same quartet finished third in the 4x100 relay in 46.24 seconds.

The quartet of Noah Lebsack, Hennigan, Redlinger and Roder won the 4x400 relay in a season-best time of 3:38.31, and the 4x800 relay team of Alan Sanchez, Justin Hoffman, Lebsack and Austin Latcham ran a season-best time of 8:40.63 to finish second.

“They ran smart races,” Roth said of his relay teams. “The handoffs were perfect. We didn’t have any problems with handoffs last night.”

Washington’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Hennigan, Jeff Knupp, Alex Gonzalez and Jack Giardino finished third in 1:07.31, and the 1,600 medley relay squad of Tanner Knupp, Garrett Covington, Spencer Woods and Latcham was fourth in 4:01.40.

Roder took third place in the 100-meter dash in 12.10 seconds, and Covington finished fourth in the 200-meter dash in 25.40 seconds. Hoffman came in third in the 800-meter run in 2:12.51, and Sanchez was sixth in 2:16.51. Freshman Michael Ellingson finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:22.91. Sophomore Curtis Vest placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 11:45.59, and he was sixth in the 1,600-meter run in 2:16.51.

Washington scored 134 points and took second place in Class A. Mediapolis won the Class A title with 182 points.

“It was unbelievable,” Roth said of his team’s performance. “We came to compete. That’s what we talked about. That’s all we can ask this time of year. We just have to get better and better. The PRs were outstanding.”
