In past years, many people have gotten to take home a tree during the annual giveaway.

This may be the 25th year for the annual tree giveaway being held on the east side of the square beginning at 8 a.m., but tree committee chair Marde McConnell is unsure.
“We had just wanted to have a project that gives everyone the opportunity to get a tree,” she said.
This year the committee is offering 11 varieties of trees. Small tree varieties include Northstar Dwarf Sour Cherry; First Edition Spring Wonder Sargent Cherry; Amur Chokecherry; Golden Eclipse Lilac; and Korean Maple. Medium varieties include State Street Maple; Apollo Sugar Maple; Yellowwood; and Ironwood. Large varieties include Canaan Fir, and Eastern White Pine.
Before planting the trees, people should dial Iowa One Call (1-800-292-8989), which will check to see if there are any underground obstructions. This should be done a minimum of 48 hours prior to the desired time of planting. The committee recommends marking the desired location with a marker of some kind that is at least 15 inches tall. If residents plan to plant a tree in their terrace they must pick up a tree permit from city hall. Not all species of trees may be planted in the terrace.
McConnell said that she has driven around town many times and seen trees that she knows the committee has given to the owner.
“You get a sense of ownership,” she said. “Even volunteers who have helped us with projects take ownership in the trees they have planted on a target street or target area. There are a few trees I know that were giveaway trees that are big, beautiful shade trees now.”
The tree giveaway is partly sponsored by Alliant Energy and the Washington, Iowa Betterment Foundation
