Area athletes compete at Drake Relays

DES MOINES – 15 area athletes competed in the 2014 Drake Relays, held on the campus of Drake University last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Senior Alex Coker and junior Tommy Peterson of Washington along with senior Rickey Rivers of Columbus Community got things going in the field events on Thursday, April 24.
Rivers and Coker competed against each other and the rest of the field in the long jump. Rivers’ best leap was 21 feet, 1 ½ inches. That placed him ninth. Coker placed right behind Rivers with his jump of 20-11 ½.
Peterson placed 18th in the shot put at 47-1 ¾.
On Friday, area athletes got their day going with the girls’ 4x100-meter relay. The Demon team of senior Dema Giardino, senior Grace Redlinger, senior Stephanie Fishback and junior Macy Marek placed 16th in the preliminaries with a time of 50.58 seconds.
Mid-Prairie’s girls’ 100 relay squad (junior Lexi Duwa, senior Arissa Marine, sophomore Emily Cayton and sophomore Alex Rath) took 71st place in the prelims with a time of 52.73.
Friday wrapped up for the area’s contestants with the boys’ 100 relay. Coker, senior Carl Sivels, junior Gage Redlinger and sophomore Jack Giardino represented Washington. They finished in 45.07, good for 59th place.
WACO also had a boys’ 100 relay team. Junior Brett Heseltien, sophomore Bryce Achen, freshman Cornell Hulme and senior Dylan Carlson placed 66th with their time of 45.25.
