At the Library
The Washington Public Library is participating in the “All Iowa Reads” program again this year, and we’re inviting all interested community members to check out a copy of the book at the library and come to a book discussion on Monday, July 29, at 6 p.m.
The purpose of All Iowa Reads is to foster a sense of unity through reading. The program encourages Iowans statewide to come together in their communities to read and talk about a single book title in the same year. Libraries, book clubs, schools and other local organizations are encouraged to sponsor discussions of the title, and that's just what the Washington Public Library has set out to do.
The 2013 All Iowa Reads selection is "The Year We Left Home" by Jean Thompson. This sweeping and emotionally powerful story reveals the lives of a single American family during the tumultuous final decades of the 20th century.
“Stretching from the early 1970s in the Iowa farmlands to suburban Chicago to the coast of contemporary Italy—and moving through the Vietnam War’s aftermath, the farm crisis, the numerous economic booms and busts—The Year We Left Home follows the Erickson siblings as they confront prosperity and heartbreak, setbacks and triumphs, and seek their place in a country whose only constant seems to be breathtaking change. Ambitious, richly told, and fiercely American, this is a vivid and moving meditation on our continual pursuit of happiness and an incisive exploration of the national character."
