At the Library
Martin Luther King Day was celebrated on Monday, Jan. 20. In honoring Dr. King, people are asked to make it a day of service by volunteering in their communities. In an annual report issued by the Corporation for National and Community Service, they found that one in four American adults volunteer. They reported that 64.5 million Americans served 7.9 billion hours for an estimated value of $175 billion!
I can only wonder how much our local volunteers contribute to these statistics. Our community is blessed to be filled with so many who have enriched Washington by the endless hours they have volunteered to bring the positive changes that have made Washington the great community it is. Our beautiful library wouldn’t be here today, without all the countless hours our library board and friends volunteered before and during the library building project. It is a privilege to come downtown every day and work in such a wonderful space. Having this opportunity reminds me of the positive impact volunteering has in communities and serving the needs of many. I don’t think there can be a value placed on volunteering — it is priceless.
“Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Martin Luther King Jr.
Happy birthday Dr. King.
