At the LibrarySpooky Stories to Read and Tell
A while back I asked a friend who is very knowledgeable about Washington history, especially its unique (i.e., weird) history, if he knew of any collection of Washington ghost stories. That sent him on a quest for such a collection which sadly turned up nothing.
The library owns a few books on Iowa ghost stories – Ghostly Tales of Iowa by Ruth Hein (133.1 HEI), The Iowa Road Guide to Haunted Locations by Chad Lewis (917.7704 LEW), and Old Capitol’s Ghosts by Robert Belding (977.7 BEL) – but, alas, no Washington stories.
With Halloween just around the corner and the “witching hour” upon us, I challenge Washingtonians young and old to share with the library your favorite ghost stories set right here in Washington. Perhaps there’s a witch that lives in a spooky old house just up the street from your own, or your brother’s friend’s babysitter definitely saw a ghost in an upstairs window downtown.
Write the stories down and get them to us – drop them by the library (or fly them over by broomstick for that matter), mail them to 115 W. Washington St., Washington, IA 52353, or e-mail them to me at email@example.com. We’ll be compiling the stories to share with future generations of Washingtonians.
If you’re looking for a spooky story in the meantime, stop by the library and go batty for books.
