Baseball All-District teams announced
Although the area baseball teams weren’t able to advance to the state tournament this season, a number of athletes were honored by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday.
Washington led the area with first-team nominations, as both Walker Breard and Elijah Wood were on the list.
Breard led the team in hitting with a .427 batting average, the second-highest among the first-team selections. He also led the Demons in homeruns (10) and RBIs (43) on the season.
Wood was the ace of the Demon’s rotation, going 4-2 this year, with a final ERA of 0.99 and 82 strikeouts over 56 2/3 innings. He also had an on-base percentage of .321 and 15 RBIs this season for Washington.
Mid-Prairie baseball had three players recognized for their efforts on the diamond, with Seth Eash, Spencer Shalla and Carson Gingerich earning second-team honors for the 2A southeast district.
Eash started nine games for the Golden Hawks this season, and ended the year with a 0.97 ERA and 68 strikeouts over 57 2/3 innings. He also batted .281 on the year with 17 RBIs.
Shalla led the team in on-base percentage (.529) despite playing in only 20 games this season. He led the team with two homeruns, and was tied for the team lead in average with Gingerich
Gingerich, an eighth-grader, led the team with 22 runs on the year while batting an impressive .360, while getting on-base at a clip of .457. He also drew a team-high 15 walks.
In the 1A All-district teams, Dallas Nye was the lone Iowa Mennonite representative, named to the second team in the southeast region.
Nye led the team in on-base percentage (.529), batting average (.392), RBIs (22) and homeruns (4), while finishing second on the team in runs (20).
