Board approved alumni game
The Washington Community School District (WCSD) school board approved a motion for an alumni football game to be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014.
The alumni football game will coincide with Washington’s 175th Anniversary, said Washington High School principal Erik Buchholz. The game would be run by Alumni Football USA and half the proceeds would go back to the school district.
The game would be against Washington’s rival Mt. Pleasant.
“I just happened to run into the A.D. [athletic director] at Mt. Pleasant last week and asked him about the game, and he’s all for it,” Buchholz said. “He e-mailed me and said that he has 15 guys already wanting to play at the game.”
Alumni Football USA would provide the liability insurance for the game and would sell the tickets for people to attend, Buchholz said.
WCSD superintendent Dr. Mike Jorgensen said he had concerns before about the liability that would come from the game, but after seeing a copy of the group’s liability insurance those concerns went away.
Board member Sheryl Lewis asked Buchholz who the money would go to.
“I would like to leave that up to the board,” Buchholz said.
“I already have an idea what that money could be used for,” Jorgensen said. “We were thinking of starting a Google 1:1 program at the middle school next year.”
Afterward, a motion was made to allow the alumni football game and the decision of where the funds would go to be decided at a later date. The motion passed unanimously.
Other items covered at the school board meeting were:
• nominating a delegate to attend the Iowa Association of School Boards convention (IASB) from Nov. 20 – 21. Ericka Raber said she would attend;
• approving the superintendent’s goals for the 2013-14 fiscal year. The goals include having a report submitted to the school board on the reading and math goals and the district’s achievement, improving communication with parents and students about the opportunities they can pursue with Kirkwood Community College while attending Washington High School, and to work on teacher compensation and leadership goals in the district;
•approving grant applications to be submitted to the Washington County Riverboat Foundation (WCRF);
• and approved a request for the FFA to travel out of state for a class trip.
The next school board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the Brighton Community Center.
