Brighton man arrested for taking deer illegally

By Xiomara Levsen | Dec 09, 2013

BRIGHTON—The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has charged a Brighton man with two counts of illegal possession of whitetail deer.
Thomas Charest, 55, was charged on Thursday, Dec. 5, according to a press release from the Iowa DNR. The charges include taking a buck deer over bait, one count of taking deer out of season and one count of hunting deer without a license or habitat fee.
Charest allegedly shot a buck deer over bait near his residence in September. The buck deer scored about 140 inches. He also allegedly shot a deer scoring 179 inches over bait in October 2012, the press release said, and reported it to the DNR’s harvesting reporting system. On New Year’s Day he took another deer scoring 145-150 inches without a tag.
Charest has also been found illegally possessing a deer measuring scoring inches, along with two deer from South Dakota and one from North Dakota. The deers from North and South Dakota are under investigation.
Iowa DNR conservation officer Wes Gould, assigned to Washington and Keokuk counties, received a tip on the Turn in Poachers hotline, which led to Charest’s charges. If convicted Charest could face fines and civil penalties up to $6,170. Charest is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 18.
