Central Lee spoils Senior Night
The Washington High School girls’ basketball team suffered a 48 – 37 defeat at home in a non-conference game against the Central Lee Little Hawks on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
“Our effort was short. Thankfully it wasn’t a conference game. We’ll do our best to put this one behind us and move on to Keokuk on Friday night,” Demon head coach Phil Long said.
Neither teams’ shots could find the basket through the first eight minutes of play as attempt after attempt rimmed out to create a score of 8 – 6 at the beginning of the second quarter, the Little Hawks in the lead.
“Our shots got shorter and we got frustrated because we weren’t getting to the free-throw line when we drove the lane,” Long added.
The shooting struggles continued in the second period for Washington but Central Lee was able to establish an interior presence and get some put-back shots to fall on offensive rebounds to take a 24 – 14 lead into halftime.
The Demons finally were able to locate the bottom of the net in the third quarter, outscoring the Little Hawks 13 – 11 to cut into the Central Lee lead. In the fourth quarter Washington was able to get that deficit down to four points but couldn’t get over the hump to take a lead.
Senior Grace Redlinger led the Demons in points with 15. Senior Addisen Shive and junior Sydney Hoffman both had four rebounds. Senior Stephanie Fishback had three assists. Senior Dema Giardino totaled six steals.
The Demons are now 10 – 5 overall, 1 – 1 in conference. Washington plays on Friday, Jan. 31 at Keokuk.
