Columbus girls take Senior Night game
The Columbus Junction High School girls’ varsity basketball team won a home Southeast Iowa Super Conference game against the Louisa – Muscatine Falcons 40 – 21 on Friday, Jan. 31.
The first points of the game weren’t scored until 3:20 was left in the first quarter and the Falcons took a 5 – 2 lead into the second quarter. Columbus junior Claire Hamilton tied the game with a 3-point basket with 3:40 left in the second quarter. Louisa – Muscatine went on a run to re-take the lead but the Wildcats followed with a run of their own to tie the game with 0:41 left in the first half. A Falcon 3-pointer just before halftime gave Louisa – Muscatine a 16 – 13 halftime lead.
With 5:21 left in the third quarter, Columbus senior Martha Anaya hit a free-throw to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game at 17 – 16. From there it was all Columbus as the inside-out offense and defense built the Wildcat lead.
“We started into a zone press but they [Louisa – Muscatine] got comfortable. We turned up the pressure in the second half and forced them to make quicker decisions,” Columbus Junction head coach Kasey Keltner said.
As a team Columbus shot 36 percent from the field (14/39), 1/5 from 3-point range and 11/20 from the free-throw line. The Wildcats grabbed 31 rebounds and twelve steals. Columbus’ players also made nine assists.
Junior Kelsey Pretz led the Wildcats with four steals and registered both of the blocked shots. Anaya led Columbus in assists with seven.
“Our leadership from our seniors helped us a lot tonight. We wanted to work the ball to me in the lower sections of the court,” Pretz explained.
The Wildcats are now 7 – 10 overall, 6 – 10 in the SEISC and have won four games in a row. Columbus plays on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at WACO.
