Columbus rallies to defeat Pekin in overtime
COLUMBUS JUNCTION — Columbus trailed visiting Pekin 26-20 heading into the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division contest, but the Wildcats rallied to force overtime, where they prevailed 34-32.
Columbus senior Megan Pretz scored seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter, and her basket with less than a minute remaining tied the game at 32. The Wildcats had one last chance to win in regulation, but senior Caitlin Chaney’s shot at the buzzer was off the mark.
Sophomore Kelsey Pretz and junior Martha Anaya both made a free throw in the overtime period, as Columbus out-scored the Panthers 2-0 in the extra frame to earn the win.
Chaney scored a game-high 12 points to lead the Wildcats (8-7, 7-7 SEISC North). Kelsey Pretz finished with eight points.
Junior Samantha Wright scored 10 points to lead Pekin (6-9, 6-8 SEISC North). Freshman Gwynne Wright added nine points, and junior Jessica Horras had eight.
