Committee to hold public meeting
Three Washington County elected officials will hold a hearing at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the Board of Supervisors’ Room in the basement of the county courthouse concerning the resignation of Supervisor Ron Bennett and the possible appointment to fill the vacancy.
An official public notice was printed on page 5 of the Thursday, Aug. 1, Washington Evening Journal. According to that notice a committee of county officers will hold a public meeting and hearing pursuant to Iowa Code Section 69.8(4) to fill the vacancy for the District 5 seat on the Board of Supervisors created by Bennett’s resignation. The committee could possibly fill the vacancy by appointing someone from District 5 as supervisor.
Bennett’s resignation becomes effective Aug. 7. He said he is resigning for health reasons.
The committee members are Auditor Dan Widmer, Recorder Jo Greiner and Treasurer Jeff Garrett.
The notice states that if the vacancy for District 5 is filled by appointment, the electors of District 5 have the right to file a petition requiring the vacancy be filled by special election pursuant to the procedure set forth in Iowa Code Section 69.14A(1)(b).
