Couple creates scholarship endowment to benefit Mid-Prairie students
KALONA — Claude and Mary Greiner, Kalona residents, have recently set up an endowment benefiting the Mid-Prairie School Foundation through the Community Foundation of Washington County (CFWC). Distributions will be used for annual scholarships for graduating Mid-Prairie seniors. CFWC is an affiliate of the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend (CFGRB), who works with more than 20 school foundations throughout the region.
“I have always been an advocate of the saying, ‘If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime.’ ” says Claude Greiner, area farmer and businessman. “We want to help deserving students go to college or a trade school after their high school graduation. Our goal is to enable students to receive training and education so that they can become productive members of society.”
Claude and Mary have been active in the Kalona community with their participation in 4-H, church activities and the Mid-Prairie Athletic Booster Club.
“Our parents always stressed the importance of working hard and getting a good education,” emphasized Mary Greiner. “We want to pass along these values to the next generation.”
