The first meeting of the 2013-14 club year for Wednesday Study Club was held on the evening of Sept. 19, with 11 members enjoying a salad supper at the United Church of Crawfordsville.
Hostesses Pauline Richardson, Helen Lease and Joan Anderson provided the main dish, rolls and drink and, as usual, members of the losing reading team from the previous year provided salads.
Dues were paid and program booklets for the 2013-14 club year were distributed. Program Chairperson Deb Lowe explained the various activities presented for each month.
The evening’s program was presented by Wilma McAllister, who gave a report about the reading contest from the previous year. Marie Dare was captain of the winning team. Many club members read more books than they had the previous year. Wilma had decided that the captains for the reading teams (Marie Dare and Maxine Martin) had served many years in that capacity, so new ones should be chosen. By a system of a chance drawing, Deb Lowe and Helen Lease are now the captains for 2013-14. The captains drew names that will form their new teams.
For the next meeting on Oct. 16, members will meet at the church parking lot at 9 a.m. to travel to the Toolesboro Indian Mounds and the Wapello Museum. Lunch will be at the Piggy Bank Café in Oakville.
Special event of the evening was the good rain — the first since July.
The youth of the United Church of Crawfordsville and the Ainsworth Community Church will hold a joint car wash on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 from 2 to 5 p.m. at O’Reilly Auto Parts in Washington.
The Membership and Mission Committee has joined with Pastor Jason in asking members of the church and community to donate blankets for the homeless. They are challenging people to fill the box in the narthex.
WACO Elementary School asked for two volunteers for Friday plus 1 days. One person is needed for Lego Robotics with Mrs. Kissell from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., and one for the Enrichment Class from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. This is a great opportunity to be the church to the young people. For more information, contact Pastor Jason.
