Cruz, Wildcats defeat IMS
KALONA – The No. 13 in Class 1A Columbus Community boys’ soccer team traveled to take on their Southeast Iowa Super Conference foe, the Iowa Mennonite School, on Saturday, April 26. After 80 minutes of soccer had been played, the Wildcats got on the bus with a 4 – 1 victory.
Columbus dominated possession early but it was IMS who scored first on a pass from Kobi Rossum to Alex Kurtz.
Alex Cruz of Columbus was able to corral a loose ball in front of the IMS net and stick in the equalizer just before the half.
The second half started as a defensive struggle in which both teams were unable to get a clear advantage in possession.
The IMS defense then struggled to maintain focus and the Wildcats’ Ruben Paz scored after some nifty passes down the left side of the field from Cruz for the 2 - 1 lead.
Cruz broke free for a one-on-one opportunity against Conrad with 1:30 left. Cruz again sprung through for the final goal and hat trick with only seconds remaining on the clock to cement the win.
