Davis finishes high school basketball career
About 11 years ago, if you had taken a stroll by the Craig and Jane Davis residence here in Washington on a warm evening, you very well might have seen a 7-year-old girl in the driveway. That young woman would have been trying to best her older brother, Thomas, at the game of basketball.
That girl, whose name is Kristin Davis, still resides in Washington but is now 18 years old and has recently concluded her high school basketball career at the Iowa Mennonite School with the fruits of all those driveway games evident.
The Davis family together decided that Kristin would go to IMS for high school.
“I had a lot of friends in Kalona and both of my older siblings had gone there. It’s a really good school academically and it’s where I wanted to go,” Kristin explained.
Basketball is a family affair for the Davises, started by Craig and carried out by his children. Kristin started for the IMS varsity team from her freshman year on. In 92 games for IMS, she totaled 805 points, 291 assists, 239 rebounds, 181 steals and 13 blocks. Those numbers work out to an average of 8.75 points, 3.16 assists, 2.59 rebounds, 1.97 steals and 0.14 blocks per game.
IMS’ benefits from Kristin’s play, along with the rest of her senior classmates’ contributions, is shown in the win-loss column as well. IMS just had its most successful varsity girls’ basketball season in 15 years this past season, finishing with a record of 14 – 10 overall, 11 – 10 in Southeast Iowa Super Conference games.
Kristin says her favorite memories from her four years of playing basketball at IMS include “beating Pekin my freshman year. We were down in the fourth quarter and they were really good. We came back and beat them. I also enjoyed beating English Valleys this year in their first game in their new gym. I always had a lot of fun with my teammates.”
Kristin finishes her basketball career as a team captain for the past two seasons, two-time second-team All-Conference award winner and a first-team All-Conference Libero honoree.
After graduation from IMS, Kristin plans to study elementary education but is undecided as of yet where she wants to study. Kristin also played volleyball and ran track during her time at IMS.
Warmer weather seems to be returning to Washington. If you take a stroll by the Davis residence yet today and you get lucky, you might even yet see a young woman out on the driveway playing basketball.
