Demon boys hit bumps at Ames
AMES – The Washington High School boys’ golf team participated in a six-team meet at the Ames Golf and Country Club yesterday. The Demons shot a 371 in 18 holes, placing them sixth in the field.
“Sometimes in golf, the course wins. Today was that day for our golf team. The wind contributed to our struggling performance as our mental aspect of the game was challenged. We learned many valuable lessons that hopefully will help in the short term as we enter our conference and sectional meet next week. In the longer picture, these difficult rounds will make us a better team as each golfer examines what it takes to reach the level of success we have enjoyed in previous years. I told our guys that they need to ‘own’ their score, whether it is higher or lower. I have confidence in our guys to improve in the final stretch of our season,” Washington head coach Mark Berhow said.
Derek Anding led the Demons with his 88. Anding was followed by Ryan Waite, who shot a 90. Blake Weidman carded a 95. Mason Rich carded a 98. Austin Hazelett completed the scoring rounds with his 102.
Grant Marek also played a round, shooting a 97. The Demons will play their final home meet of the regular season tomorrow in a Southeast Conference triangular against Fairfield and Keokuk.
