Demon wrestlers perform well at tournament in Solon

SOLON-The Washington High School wrestling team had 11 wrestlers participate at The Ed Hadenfeldt Wrestling Invitational in Solon on Saturday, Jan. 18. All the Demon wrestlers recorded at least two victories, with two Washington wrestlers going undefeated in the tournament.
Freshman Alex Latcham started the day for Washington at 106 pounds, recording two victories by decision: 6-2 over West Liberty’s Noah Bierman and 4-1 over Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Lucas Harmening.
Fellow freshman Kyle Anderson performed well at 113 pounds. Anderson won his first match by major decision over Lisbon’s Jack Butteris then went on to get two pins. The first pin was of Bailey Redlinger of Solon in 1:42 and the second was of Connor Murphy of Clear Creek-Amana in 4:36.
Undefeated 120-pound senior Fletcher Green kept his successful season going, winning all three of his bouts. Green pinned Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Justin Tedrow in 0:58. He then won his next two matches by decision, 5-1 over Lisbon’s Nick Williams and 8-3 over Solon’s Louis Gnida.
Michael Ellingson, a Washington sophomore who wrestles at 126 pounds, pinned Paul Johnson of Wapello in 5:10 and won by decision over Zach Russell of Iowa Valley 8-3.
Senior Tristan Pohren kept up the momentum for the Demons at 132 pounds, winning by major decision over Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Angel Peralta 9-1 and by decision over Solon’s Kade Steuhm 4-2.
At 138 pounds Jarek Brown added two more victories by decision to his sophomore season’s resume, 4-2 over Juan Andres of West Liberty and 8-4 over Levi Ruchotzke of North Cedar.
Junior Alex Gonzalez carried the mantle for Washington at 145 pounds, getting three victories by pin. He put Wapello’s Rogan Pforts’ shoulders to the mat in 1:18, then did the same to Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Morgan Hood in 1:59 and Lisbon’s Tanner Allen in 1:05.
Tanner Knupp kept his winning senior season going as he recorded three victories in the 152-pound weight class, all by way of pin. Austin McCall of North Cedar fell to Knupp after 1:29, Logan Takes of Lisbon in 0:29 and Trevor Schneider of West Liberty was the final victim in 5:04.
At 160 pounds Knupp’s senior classmate Austin Latcham got two more pins, sending Solon’s Joshua Bender to the showers in 1:07 and North Cedar’s Kaleb Galloway to the same place in 0:49.
To complete the senior circuit for the tournament, Logan Howard got two pins at 170 pounds. Logan Rickard of Lisbon exited the mat after 1:15 and Austin Newton of West Liberty in 1:45.
Junior Brad Skubal (182 pounds) was the other Demon wrestler besides Green to go undefeated in the tournament, winning his match against Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Tyler Pasker by a 10-2 major decision and over Solon’s Danny Whitmore 7-3.
