Washington High School’s wrestling team had 12 wrestlers participate in the Highland Tournament on Saturday, Jan 11 at Highland High School. Eleven of the 12 Demon wrestlers recorded at least one victory, with three wrestlers going undefeated in the tournament.
Fletcher Green continued his outstanding senior season at 120 pounds by winning both of his matches on Saturday. Green won by pin over Tri-County/Montezuma’s Tyler Meyer in 2:00 and by decision over Elliot Henderson of West Liberty 5-2.
Senior Tristan Pohren also contributed two victories to Washington’s count at 132 pounds, both by pins. Pohren put Tyler Frank of Highland’s shoulders to the mat in 5:36 and made short work of David Cardoza of Muscatine, pinning him in 0:52.
182-pound junior Brad Skubal was the final Demon to go undefeated on Saturday. Skubal pinned Muscatine’s Davonte Ellis in 1:43 then won by major decision over Solon’s Danny Whitmore 11-1.
Washington also recorded at least one victory in eight other weight classes, eight coming by way of a pin. At 106 pounds freshman Andrew Waite won by pin over Dayne Ehlts (West Branch) in 1:03 and Kale Latcham (Tri-County/Montezuma) in 1:34. Freshman Kyle Anderson pinned Mitchell Griffin of Columbus Community in 4:43 to give the Demons a victory in the 113-pound weight class.
At 126 pounds sophomore Michael Ellingson kept the pins coming for Washington, downing Tri-County Montezuma’s Benjamin Edmundson in 3:10. The Demons got a similar result from sophomore Jarek Brown in the 138-pound class, as he pinned Jakob Barten of West Liberty in 2:55.
Junior Alex Gonzalez put the Demons on the board at 145 pounds with pins of New London’s Drake Christe in 0:20 and Regina’s Casey Beaver in 5:41. Senior Tanner Knupp won at 152 pounds by a technical fall over Zach Kleopfer of Highland in 4:18 18-3 and pinned Trevor Nelson of Solon in 2:28.
Austin Latcham, a Demon senior at 160 pounds, pinned New London’s Tanner Schneider in 1:39 and Muscatine’s Eric Gonzales in 4:42. Junior Kyle Collier made Washington’s presence felt in the heavyweight category, pinning Cody Bartels of New London in 2:53 and Justin Gibbs of Solon in 0:30.
Freshman Karlton Skubal lost both of his matches by decision, 4-11 to Muscatine’s Ryan Broderson and 6-9 to Solon’s Nick Bailey.
Washington will be on the mat again Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Fairfield.
