MT. PLEASANT — The question for the Washington girls' track and field team isn't: Who's going to state?

It's: Who's not going to state?

Washington seniors Sammy Ellingson, Lauren Kimball and Kaitlin Buchholz each automatically qualified at Thursday's Class 3A state qualifying meet in Mt. Pleasant. But then the Demons had to sit back and wait to see who would be joining the trio of seniors.

As it turns out, a lot more Washington athletes will be going to Des Moines. The Demons qualified a record 11 events for state.

“When the list [of state qualifiers] came out, I was thrilled to see so many events on there,” said first-year head coach Stefanie Tschantz. “Every relay that we ran qualified, and most of them ran a season best that night. We are taking 18 girls to state, and I have been told that is a record for number of girls going and number of events that are qualified.”

Ellingson cleared 5 feet, 1 inch to win the high jump competition and qualify for the state track meet in the event for the third time. And Kimball cleared 5 feet to take second place in the high jump and qualify for state in the event for the second straight year.

Buchholz had a huge night for the Demons. She automatically qualified for the state meet in the 400-meter hurdles by winning with a personal-best time of 1:08.65. She also finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 16.76 seconds, a time that was just one one-hundredth of a second off the school record time. And she led off for the shuttle hurdle relay — which also included Ellingson, Emma Wood and Kimball — that finished third in a season-best time of 1:09.76 and qualified for state.

“Kaitlin had been right around 1:10 all season in the 400 hurdles and just couldn’t seem to break it, but last night she ran 1:08.65 and won the race,” Tschantz said. “She has worked so hard, so it’s great to see those things happen.”

Washington’s 4x200 relay team of Macy Marek, Amber Salow, Grace Redlinger and Stephanie Fishback finished third in a season-best time of 1:49.45 to qualify for state. The quartet of Marek, Natalee Enfield, Salow and Fishback came in third in a season-best time of 1:56.17 to qualify for state, and the distance medley relay team of Kelly Wheeler, Enfield, Morgan Kimball and Lauren Kimball also ran a season-best time of 4:26.36 to place third and earn a trip to state.

“All around it was a phenomenal night," Tschantz said. "Season- and personal-bests were happening all night. I knew our girls could do it, but it is nice to see everything come together at the right time.”

Washington’s 4x100 relay team of Marek, Enfield, Dema Giardino and Redlinger placed third in 52.33 seconds to earn a trip to state, and the quartet of Mariah Reighard, Morgan Kimball, Lauren Kimball and Fishback is also headed to Des Moines after finishing third in the 4x400 relay in 4:16.33.

Fishback earned a trip to state in the long jump competition after taking third place with a personal-best leap of 16 feet, 4 inches, and Ellingson will run the 400-meter hurdles at state after finishing third in a personal-best time of 1:09.25. Reighard finished third in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best time of 1:02.33 to earn a trip to state.

Marek will run the 100-meter dash at state as well. She finished fifth on Thursday night in 13.33 seconds. Marek, Fishback and Lauren Kimball will compete in four events apiece at the state track meet.

“We are all very excited to get so many events to state,” Tschantz said. “The girls have worked hard all season, and it is great to see them get to state.”
