Demons take third
By Derek Helling
The 40th Annual Washington Girls’ Invitational track and field meet was held on Friday, May 2 and the field of seven schools featured some of the best athletes in the state.
The Demons placed third with 139 team points on their home track, competing with a talented Davenport Central team.
“It was good for us to see that level of competition. It gives us an idea of what we will be facing in trying to qualify for state. We’re going to continue to work on getting our times down and seeing where we have our best chances to qualify,” Washington head coach Stefanie Tschantz said.
The highlights of the night for Washington came in the first and last running events of the competition. In the 3,000-meter run, Emme Keith led nearly from the gun to the finish line, besting second place Beth Wells of Mt. Pleasant by over 30 seconds. Keith’s time was 12 minutes, 7.26 seconds.
Keith then watched and cheered on her teammates (Addison Gaal, Stephanie Fishback, Grace Redlinger and Morgan Kimball) to victory in the 4x400-meter relay, as they bested the field with their time of 4:23.85.
Second-place finishes for the Demons started with Dylann Schluetter in the discus, who made her mark at 107 feet, 3 ½ inches. Macy Marek’s time in the 100-meter dash slipped a bit at 13.46, but she still managed to place second. Kimball made a strong run in the 400-meter dash but fell just short of winning, registering a time of 1:03.09.
The usually competitive “A” 4x200-meter relay (Kelly Wheeler, Redlinger, Fishback and Marek) kept up its reputation, finishing second by a mere 0.28 seconds in 1:50.44. Marek also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.54. The “A” sprint medley (Wheeler, Dema Giardino, Fishback and Kimball) was second in 1:57.02.

Washington’s “A” distance medley (Giardino, Salow, Gaal and Mariah Howard) placed fourth with a time of 4:50.31.
