Demons, Warriors spectacular at Denny White Relays
MT. PLEASANT – The Washington and WACO high school boys’ track and field teams took part in the Denny White Relays last night. The Demons placed sixth out of eight teams in Class A with 57 points. The Warriors were seventh out of 11 teams in Class B with 60 points.
All individual placements for the Demons are in Class A and those for WACO are for Class B.
Noah Lebsack of Washington won the 400-meter dash with his time of 52.2 seconds. Demon Tommy Peterson returned to the top of the shot put heap with his throw of 50 feet, 2 inches.
The Washington 4x200-meter relay team (Tanner Knupp, Carl Sivels, Gage Redlinger and Alex Coker) finished second in 1 minute, 33.61 seconds. Coker also took second place in the long jump at 21-2. The Demon distance medley squad (Knupp, Kyle Schindler, Lebsack and Jacob Green) took third in 3:56.89.
Coker was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 23.58. The Washington “B” 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay team (Caleb Bex, Ryan Loy, Jake Reighard and Matt Reighard) took fifth place in 1:12.
“We’ve been waiting for a night like this. Noah Lebsack ran very well for us in both events. It was good to see Tommy [Peterson] get back to throwing like he is capable of. The 4x200 and distance medley guys had their best times of the year. Coker had his best jump of the season. There are still some things that we are trying to fix but it’s nothing that can’t be easily adjusted,” Washington head coach Steve Roth said.
The highlight of the night for WACO was the shuttle hurdle relay. The team of Brett Heseltien, Cornell Hulme, Bryce Achen and Dylan Carlson broke the meet record, set in 2010 by a Winfield-Mt. Union team at 1:03.72. Their time was 1:01.44.
Carlson also won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.47. Braden Blake of WACO took first in the 800-meter run in 2:09.4. The Warriors’ 4x100-meter relay squad (Heseltien, Achen, Hulme and Carlson) won in 45.12.
Achen placed third in the 200 in 24.38. Warrior Jorge Chacon was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.76.
Washington will be in action again on Tuesday, April 22 at Mid-Prairie. The Warriors host their own relays that same afternoon.
