Todd Dickinson

Todd Dickinson recently joined Fareway as the assistant manager.
Coming to Washington at the beginning of May, he said that he is originally from Pella. He graduated from Pella High School. He has worked at Fareway stores in Pella, Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, Dyersville, Eldora, and New Hampton before coming to Washington.
He and his wife Shawna have two children — Chloe and Gavin.

How did you come to be in Washington?
The opportunity opened up for me to come here. Fareway chose me to come here. I was in New Hampton and I was the assistant manager there. I don’t know. They apparently felt like it was the right fit.

What do you think of Washington?
It is good. I like the town and I like the building. It is a fun place to work. It’s just an easygoing crew and everyone seems to get along. It makes the day go quicker that way.

What is your favorite thing about Washington?
That’s a tough one. So far it would be the store. I enjoy working here. That is what I base most everything off of. That is what I do — I go to work.

How did you get involved with Fareway?
I was 17 and needed money. That is the jist of it. They were building that store in Pella at the time. They had open interviews. I went in and the rest is history. It is a good job. It’s about all I know. I enjoy what I do. I think it is fun. Selling groceries to me is fun. It is fun seeing what you can help people to buy. It’s hard to explain, but if you were to ask Dave (Waite) he would say the same thing. I want to sell things. I want to sell more than the guy next door. That is what we are after. I enjoy taking care of the customer and I enjoy seeing someone that you hire at 14 years old and being able to mold that young employee all the way through high school and hopefully to a young adult stage. That to me is exciting, because it is a great learning experience. A lot of times it is the first job for a lot of these kids who walk in here. If we can mold them into a better person, that is all the better.

What are some of your hobbies?
Family. Family comes first always. I enjoy camping. I enjoy riding around on my motorcycle. Just outdoorsy stuff.

What advice would you have to someone about to start work at a grocery store?
Do what is asked of you, learn as much as you can, ask questions, and most importantly just work your tail off. Hard work will get you a long ways in life.

What are some of your goals for the future?
Get my own building at some point.
