Golden Hawk girls prevail over Regina
KALONA - The Mid Prairie junior varsity and varsity girls’ golf teams participated in a dual meet with Iowa City Regina at the Kalona Golf Club last night.
The Golden Hawks shot a season low team score of 195 strokes to Regina’s 207 to win the varsity contest. Sophomore Allyson Wertz was the meet medalist with a nine-hole score of 43. Senior Courtney Cayton finished with a 49. Senior Laura Yoder shot a personal season-low 50. Senior Sydney Scarff had a 53. Senior Mick Van Winkle had a 55, as did freshman Olivia Nisly in her first varsity action of the season.
Regina picked up the JV win with a team score of 243 to the Golden Hawks’ 259. Freshman Lindsey Palmer posted a score of 65, freshman Cassidy Bender had a 68 and sophomore Abby Pickard finished with a 71.
“We’ve talked after a couple meets now that we were not far away from posting a sub-200 stroke round and it was nice to see the kids get that done today. The girls know they have the capability to post these kinds of scores each time they play. If they continue to improve at the pace they have so far, I think they have the potential to post some scores in the 180s, and that will win a bunch of meets for them. I also saw big improvement with the JV girls. Abby Pickard, Cassidy Bender and Lindsay Palmer have been working so hard on fundamentals and just learning the complete game. You can really see how things are starting to click for them. At the start, I think the game really came as more work than fun for them and now you can start to see that change as they understand more and more each day and each week. I was really proud of what they did tonight and also how they worked through all the bad weather as well,“ Mid-Prairie head coach Trace McArtor said.
The Mid-Prairie girls’ team hosts their own invitational this Thursday at the Kalona Golf Club.
