Golden Hawks continue winning ways for 3-1 start to campaign
Mid-Prairie volleyball earned its third win in its first four games to start the season.
It defeated Louisa-Muscatine 3-0 in a clean sweep, Tuesday at Louisa-Muscatine. The first match was the closest of the three, a 25-20 decision. In the next two matches, the Golden Hawks won by 11 and 10 points.
“I felt we started the night off slow and tight but gained cohesiveness as each match progressed,” said Mid-Prairie head coach Cindy Miller. “Everyone finally loosened up and began playing together.”
The team stats were 31 kills, 27 assists, 69 digs, 11 blocks and 91 percent serving efficiency. There were seven aces.
Junior Taylor Kurtz led the team with seven kills and five blocks.
Senior Courtney Cayton earned a team-best 18 digs to go along with six kills and two aces from 22 serves.
“Taylor Kurtz and Courtney Cayton are becoming a strong offensive threat for us due to great sets by Courtney Shalla,” Miller said.
Senior Courtney Shalla had a team-high 21 assists to go with two kills and 15 digs. She had a serving rate of 11-for-13 with one ace.
Senior Laura Yoder contributed four kills, two digs while serving a perfect 11-for-11. She had one ace.
Junior Ashley Sojka had 13 digs and served 10-10.
Junior Ashley Miller had six kills, 13 digs, two aces and 12-of-13 serving.
Senior Shaylee Brown earned five digs, two kills and 15-18 serving with one ace.
“Key defensive plays by Shaylee Brown and Ashley Miller boosted the team,” Miller said.
Rounding out the stat sheet were senior Claire Wilson with a kill, junior Ashlin Stumpf with two assists and sophomore Emily Cayton with two kills, two digs and 1-1 serving rate.
The next game is Thursday at home vs. West Liberty at 7:30 p.m.
