Golden Hawks falter in final minutes of loss to Solon
WELLMAN — No. 5 Mid-Prairie had a five-point lead with three minutes remaining in Saturday’s non-conference game against visiting Solon, but the Golden Hawks were unable to hang onto the lead as the Spartans won 49-46.
The Golden Hawks (13-5) went just 6-for-26 from the free-throw line in the game, and they missed their last nine attempts. Mid-Prairie also committed a season-high 31 turnovers.
“This was as tough of a loss as I can remember,” Mid-Prairie head coach Marc Pennington said. “We fought all game long, but once we grabbed the lead we seemed to self-destruct. We missed crucial free throws, had costly turnovers and were unable to convert numerous scoring opportunities.” Our kids did a great job fighting all night, and I am very proud of that, but it was extremely disappointing to lose the way we did.”
Sophomore Taylor Kurtz had 14 points and eight rebounds to lead the Golden Hawks, and senior Mallory McArtor added nine points.
