Golden Hawks roll to semifinal win
WELLMAN — No. 13 Mid-Prairie cruised to a 59-39 win over Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in Wednesday’s Class 3A Region 6 semifinal inside Tim Grady Gymnasium.
The Golden Hawks bolted out to a 19-4 lead after one quarter and then didn’t fold after the Raiders trimmed their lead to eight at halftime. Mid-Prairie out-scored C-M-B 17-8 in the third quarter to open up a commanding lead.
Senior Mallory McArtor scored 14 points and senior Mariah Swartzentruber added 13 to lead the Golden Hawks, who had nine players score in the game. Senior Jessie Butters chipped in nine points and a team-leading eight rebounds, and senior Meghan Redlinger had four points to go with six assists and five steals.
Mid-Prairie limited the Raiders’ 6-foot center, junior Abbie Haupert, to just 14 points. Haupert had scored 33 points in C-M-B’s 59-44 win over East Marshall on Saturday. Senior Shelby Berg added eight points for the Raiders, who finished their season with a 9-15 record.
Mid-Prairie (17-6), meanwhile, advances to Saturday’s regional final against Williamsburg, which will be played at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School. Williamsburg (17-7) upset sixth-ranked Mediapolis 66-60 in overtime on Wednesday night.
