Golden Hawks win tourney
NEWTON – The ninth-ranked in Class 1A Mid-Prairie High School varsity boys’ soccer team won the Newton Tournament on Saturday, April 5. The Golden Hawks pitched shutouts in both games, defeating PCM 3 – 0 and the host school 2 – 0. Newton had received votes for Class 2A in the preseason poll, but both of Mid-Prairie’s opponents came into the tournament unranked.
Senior Austin Errthum, senior Wyatt Cady and junior Abduhl Masabah each had goals in the game against PCM. Errthum also had an assist in the game.
In the championship game against Newton, freshman Ryan Harapat put the ball in the net late in the first half off a Cady assist to give the Golden Hawks a 1 – 0 lead at the break. Errthum then assisted Cady on Mid-Prairie’s second goal in the second half.
“Our defense was outstanding, not allowing any goals in two games,” Mid-Prairie head coach Pat Cady said.
In 160 minutes in front of the net, senior Nathan Faselt made five saves and begins the 2014 season with a perfect 1.000 save percent.
The Mid-Prairie boys are scheduled to play again this afternoon at No. 14 in Class 2A Clear Creek-Amana.
