Highland falls in semis
Highland’s bid for its 26th straight win was foiled by Eddyville-Blakesburg on Thursday morning.
Six errors doomed the Huskies as they dropped a state semifinal game 6-2 to the Rockets, but Highland will play in the third-place game on Friday morning.
Highland started off the game fast, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the first, but didn’t get a run to come across.
Eddyville-Blakesburg took that momentum into its half of the second, with a leadoff single, then a run scoring on an error. A two-out triple later in the top of the second put the Huskies in an early 3-0 hole.
In the bottom of the second, Highland got a leadoff single from Katie Chalupa and she eventually came around to score on an error, as the Huskies started to build a comeback.
In the third, a Chalupa groundout scored Courtnee Hahn, but that’s all the offense the Huskies could muster in the game.
A two-run double in the top of the seventh inning capped off the game for the Rockets, as they advanced to the state championship game.
Higland will face the loser of Earlham and Woodbury Central, which began shortly after this game finished.
