Highland gets dual victories over WACO, Pekin
RIVERSIDE - Highland High School’s and WACO High School’s varsity wrestling teams faced off in a dual meet at Highland with the Pekin Panthers on Thursday, Jan. 23. Highland defeated both Pekin and WACO.
In the match between Highland and WACO, things got started off with three double forfeits in the 182-, 195- and 220-pound weight classes. Junior Josh Shumaker got the Warriors on the board with a forfeit at 285 pounds.
Highland’s freshman duo Drew West and Bryce West got forfeits at 106 and 113 pounds to put the Huskies up 12-6. Four more double forfeitures followed at 120, 126, 132 and 138 pounds.
Travis Cole, a Highland senior who wrestled at 145 pounds, pinned WACO freshman Adrian Unternahrer in 0:28 to increase Highland’s lead to 18-6.
Huskie junior Zach Kleopfer pinned Warrior sophomore Jorge Chacon in 1:03 to clinch the victory for Highland. Huskie senior Casey Castillo got a forfeit at 160 pounds.
WACO senior Cey Saeugling got the Warriors on the board with a pin of Highland sophomore Spencer Wieland in 0:51 for the 170-pound match, making the final score 30-12 Huskies.
Castillo got the meet with Pekin started on the mat for Highland, defeating the Panthers’ Tyler Copeland with a 6-2 decision. Wieland got a forfeit to increase the Huskie lead to 9-0.
Scott Entsminger of Pekin got a forfeit at 182 pounds and 195 pounds went the way of a double forfeit. Pekin got two more forfeitures at 220 and 285 pounds to make the score 18-9 with the Panthers in the lead.
The Huskies struck back with a D. West pin of Clayton McKim in 0:41 and B. West getting a forfeit to give Highland a 21-18 lead.
Three double forfeits passed up the 120, 126 and 132 weight classes. Cole, senior Austin McCarthy and Kleopfer all got forfeits to make the final score 39-18 for a Highland victory.
The Huskies are on the mat again on Saturday, Jan. 25 at East Buchanan. The Warriors wrestle next on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Midland.
