Highland girls down Wapello 75 - 39
The Highland girls’ basketball team used a tremendous defensive effort and a well-distributed offense to get their eighth win of the season 75-39 at Wapello on Monday, Jan. 13 in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference game.
The Huskies held Wapello to just 37 percent shooting from the field and stole the ball 25 times en route to the 36-point victory. Wapello helped Highland out by going for 4/13 from the charity stripe. Highland also outrebounded Wapello 27-24.
“We played a very good well-rounded game,” head coach Jody Fink commented.
Senior guard Kaitlin Hora led all Huskie scorers with 20 points on 10/16 shooting. Hora also recorded two assists, three rebounds and five assists to cap off her performance. Junior guard Bridget Murphy dropped 17 points on 2/4 shooting from the field and went 4/5 from beyond the three-point line.
As a team the Huskies shot an impressive 54 percent (22/41) from the field and 78 percent (7/9) from behind the arc. Highland also made 10 of their 11 free-throw attempts.
Highland had two other scorers in double figures, freshman guard Kelsey Hora with 13 on and junior guard Chelsey Lampe with 11.
“We need to communicate and identify shots better still, but [I’m] very pleased with the overall effort. Great job on the free throw line also,” Fink added.
Junior guard Katie Springer added eight points for the Huskies. Senior forward Jordan Rath, senior guard Sierra Drish, and junior forward Samantha Dutton all contributed two points a piece to round out Highland’s scoring.
The win improves the Huskies’ record to 8-3 overall, 6-3 in SISC play. Highland’s girls’ team will next take the court on Tuesday.
