Highland goes 2-1 at Calamus-Wheatland tournament
CALAMUS — No. 12 Highland went 2-1 at the Calamus-Wheatland softball tournament on Saturday.
The Huskies opened the tournament by blanking Camanche 5-0. Senior Paige Wieland went 4-for-4 and drove in a run in the game, and sophomore Morgan Craig was 2-for-3 at the plate. Freshman Cheyann Adamson went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs, and freshman Jenna Dresselhaus drove in a run with a pinch-hit single.
Sophomore pitcher Katie Springer threw seven shutout innings against the Indians (4-5). She gave up six hits and struck out three batters without issuing a walk.
Highland topped host Calamus-Wheatland 9-4, tallying 12 hits in the game against the Warriors (3-10). Adamson went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs, and sophomore Bridget Murphy was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Craig went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Hora and junior Jordan Rath were both 2-for-3. Walsh had a double and an RBI, and Wieland singled and drove in a run.
Springer allowed four runs on six hits in six innings. She struck out four batters and walked two.
Highland suffered its second loss of the season to North Cedar, falling 8-5. The Knights (6-6) scored all eight runs in the first four innings.
Adamson went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs to lead the Huskies (12-2) at the plate, and sophomore Courtnee Hahn was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Craig hit a double, while Wieland, Murphy and Hora each singled.
Sophomore Katie Chalupa took the loss for Highland, allowing four runs, one of which was earned, in two innings. She struck out one batter and did not issue a walk.
