Highland holds off IMS to stay unbeaten in conference play
KALONA — No. 12 Highland held off host IMS to win Thursday’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division softball game 3-2.
The Huskies (9-1, 6-0 SEISC North) scored two runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early lead, but IMS (3-4, 3-4 SEISC North) answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Highland added a run in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. IMS had one last chance in the seventh with runners on first and third with one out, and a passed ball trimmed the lead to one, but IMS was unable to tie the score.
Sophomore Morgan Craig went 3-for-3 with a double and a run for the Huskies, and sophomore Bridget Murphy had a triple. Senior Paige Wieland singled and scored a run, while senior Kassie Vazquez and sophomore Bailey Walsh both added hits.
Sophomore Katie Springer got the win for Highland, allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on just three hits. She struck out 10 batters and walked three.
Senior Laura Hochstetler threw a good game for IMS as well, allowing three runs on seven hits. She struck out five batters. Junior Jacayla Litwiller, junior Casey Perez and sophomore Stasia Majerick each had a hit for IMS.
“This was another good win for us,” Highland head coach Carrie Wieland said. “[Hochstetler] is a good pitcher, and we did not hit well. But we didn’t have a bad inning and we stayed under control.”
