Highland knocks off Cedar Valley Christian
RIVERSIDE — Highland trailed visiting Cedar Valley Christian by two points heading into the fourth quarter of Thursday’s Class 1A District 6 quarterfinal, but the home team poured in 30 points in the final stanza to win 81-70.
Senior Jake Hootman scored a career-high 33 points to lead Highland (14-8), and he also grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Talon McFarland added 13 points, and junior Josh Brase had 10 points and seven assists. Senior Brad Lampe dished out nine assists and had five steals.
Senior Will Muhlbach had 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead Cedar Valley Christian, which lost despite having five scorers in double figures. Senior Jeremy Strutz added 12 points, six rebounds and six assists, and senior Evan Koch had 11 points. Seniors Jon Landis and Spencer Zielke chipped in 10 points apiece.
Cedar Valley Christian had entered the game red hot, winning 13 of its last 15 regular-season games, but the Huskies finished their season with a record of 14-9. Highland, on the other hand, advances to Tuesday’s district semifinal at No. 5 Lone Tree. The Lions (22-1) won both regular-season contests against Highland by a combined 59 points.
