Jun 19, 2013

RIVERSIDE — No. 6 Highland hammered out 25 hits as it swept rival Lone Tree in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division softball doubleheader on Tuesday night.

The Huskies collected 11 hits in the opening game as they won 9-2. Eighth-grader Kelsey Hora went 3-for-3 at the plate, stole six bases, scored three runs and drove in two to lead Highland.

“Peanut did a great job of hitting in both games tonight,” Highland head coach Carrie Wieland said of Hora. “Her speed makes everyone nervous.”

Sophomore Bailey Walsh went 2-for-4 with a double, and sophomore Morgan Craig was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Bridget Murphy went 2-for-5 with a double. Senior Paige Wieland had a hit and two RBIs, and freshman Cheyann Adamson had a hit and an RBI.

Meanwhile, Highland sophomore pitcher Katie Springer limited the Lions to two runs, one of which was earned, on five hits. She struck out six batters and walked one.

Highland smashed 14 more hits in the second game, which it won 10-0 in five innings. Craig went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the Huskies, and Walsh was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Hora went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs, and sophomore Bridget Murphy was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Senior Paige Wieland went 2-for-4. Senior Kassie Vazquez had a triple and an RBI in the game, and sophomore Courtnee Hahn doubled and drove in a run. Junior Jordan Rath also had a hit for the Huskies.

“We did a great job at the plate tonight,” Carrie Wieland said. “We just hit the cover off the ball.”

Springer also picked up the win in the second game, where she allowed just two hits over five shutout innings. She struck out five batters and walked one.

Highland, which has won 10 straight games, improved to 22-2 overall and 12-0 in the conference. The Huskies travel to Wapello on Thursday night for a key division matchup with Wapello, which is 10-2 and in second place in the league.
