Highland takes sixth place at Willard Howell Invitational
WAPELLO — Highland crowned one individual champion and had seven other wrestlers place at Saturday’s Willard Howell Invitational at Wapello.
Junior Travis Cole, who is ranked third in Class 1A, won the 126-pound title. Cole won a 9-3 decision over Wapello freshman Ruger McNeil in the first round, and then defeated Mt. Pleasant junior Alex Lanphier by technical fall, 15-0, in the semifinals. Finally, he won a 4-2 decision over Fort Madison sophomore Nick Otte in the finals.
Senior Devin Mapp was runner-up at heavyweight. After receiving a first-round bye, Mapp pinned Durant sophomore Levi Novinski in 1:05 in the semifinals. But Mt. Pleasant’s Emmett Wester pinned Mapp in the third period in the finals.
Senior Brett Walsh, who is ranked 10th in Class 1A, finished third at 160 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, Walsh was pinned by Wilton junior Gaige Hilty in the semifinals. But Walsh battled back to take third place, pinning Fort Madison sophomore Matt Smith in the consolation final.
Sophomore 120-pounder Zach Kleopfer, junior 132-pounder Kody Wood, sophomore 138-pounder Tyler Frank and sophomore 152-pounder Josh Kasparek each finished fifth for the Huskies. Junior Casey Castillo was sixth at 145 pounds.
Highland finished sixth out of 10 teams at the tournament with 91.5 points.
Sigourney-Keota, which finished seventh with 90 points, also had a champion and seven other placewinners at Saturday’s tournament.
Senior Josh Yoder won the 145-pound title. After receiving a first-round bye, Yoder won a 9-0 major decision over Fort Madison senior Brady Petry in the semifinals. Yoder then pinned Wilton senior Richard Janney in 1:46 to win the title.
Senior Wes Yoder was runner-up at 152 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, Yoder edged Mt. Pleasant senior Michael Anderson 11-9 in the semifinals. But he lost a 4-1 decision to Wilton junior Kaleb Schmidt in the finals.
Junior Jeremiah Green took third place at 132 pounds. He won a major decision over Wapello sophomore Logan Grimm in the first round, but lost by technical fall to Fort Madison senior Christian Dunn, who is ranked fourth in Class 3A, in the semifinals. Green pinned his next opponent and then won a 9-4 decision over Columbus sophomore Austin Edwards in the third-place match.
Sophomore Cole Streigle took third place at 170 pounds. He lost an 11-4 decision to Wilton junior Koy Snider in the semifinals, but pinned Mt. Pleasant sophomore Noah Brown in the third-place match.
Junior 195-pounder Noah Schuster took fourth place, and sophomore 160-pounder Gage Greiner placed fifth. Sophomore 120-pounder Nathan Fritz and sophomore 126-pounder Jake Van Ee both finished sixth for the Savage Cobras.
Columbus, which finished eighth as a team with 84 points, had a pair of wrestlers take second place at the tournament.
Senior Mitchell Roush pinned both of his first two opponents, but suffered a 6-4 loss to Fort Madison junior Trenton Johnson in the 138-pound final. Junior Mark Ramirez pinned Wapello freshman Justin Frank in the first round, and then won a 5-0 decision over Seth Kerr in the semifinals. But he lost a 3-2 decision to Mt. Pleasant senior Colton Aplara, who is ranked fifth in Class 3A, in the 195-pound final.
Edwards, freshman 106-pounder Josh Keller and junior 145-pounder Zac Howell each took fourth place for the Wildcats. Sophomore Zack Gaddy was fifth at 182 pounds.
