IMS gets conference win
KALONA – The Iowa Mennonite School’s soccer team hosted Southeast Iowa Super Conference opponent Central on a wet night and defended their pitch in a 7 – 2 victory last night.
Central Lee found the goal first six minutes into the game. As an IMS defender slipped, allowing the player to head to the goal unimpeded, the Central Lee player sent a nice cross across the box where a teammate was able to knock the ball into the net.
IMS responded quickly, though. Kirby Shetler sent a ball into Kobi Russom who continued the ball’s progress to the corner of the net to tie the game just a minute later.
Just minutes later Eli Gingerich beat a defender down the side and found Shetler making a run. Shetler took the pass and turned the ball into the net. Three minutes later Shetler found the goal again, this time on an assist from Spencer Schrock.
Not giving up, Central Lee pushed the ball forward and took a twisting shot from distance, getting it by the goalie for the 3 – 2 score. Shetler and Spencer took charge of the situation combing for the next goal to move the score to 4 – 2, IMS leading.
Moments later Enrique Sanchez powered into the box where he was tripped as he went to goal. On the penalty kick, Sanchez stepped up and buried the ball into the goal.
Keeping the pressure on, Russom found Alex Kurtz on the far post. Kurtz took a dribble and sent the ball firmly by the goalie. Mere seconds later Sanchez put another ball into the goal for the 7 – 2 halftime score.
With the win IMS moves to 4 – 3 overall and 4 – 2 in conference play. IMS hosts Wapello in another conference match on Thursday, May 1.
