IMS shocks Wapello in eight innings
KALONA — IMS dealt a serious blow to Wapello’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division championship hopes by defeating the Arrows 4-3 in eight innings on Tuesday evening.
IMS (7-9, 6-7 SEISC North) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on junior Casey Perez’s RBI double, but Wapello took the lead with two runs in the third. IMS regained the lead in the sixth inning when it loaded the bases and two runs scored on a wild pitch, but the Arrows came through with a run in the seventh inning to send the game to extras.
With runners on second and third and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, IMS senior Naomi Miller hit a dribbler up the third base line, forcing a tough throw to first base. The pitcher over threw the base, allowing sophomore Stasia Majerick to score the winning run. The loss was just the second in the conference for Wapello (14-8, 10-2 SEISC North).
Perez went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for IMS, and junior Jacayla Litwiller was also 2-for-4 with two doubles. Miller went 2-for-5 with a double. Majerick, senior Laura Hochstetler, sophomore McKayla Brush and sophomore Hannah Miller each chipped in a hit for IMS.
Hochstetler got the win after giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on just five hits in eight innings. She struck out eight batters and walked two.
