IMS softball splits WACO
Iowa Mennonite Softball had to rebound in the second game of their doubleheader, and answered the call on Tuesday night.
IMS dropped the first game of a doubleheader to WACO 5-4, but the offense came to life in the second game, defeating the Warriors 15-3 in three innings.
“That’s what we’ve worked on all year long,” IMS softball coach Kim Wood said. “We’ve known from the beginning that we were going to be small but losses are just something we need to put behind us and move forward to the next game.”
In game one, IMS took a quick lead, scoring three runs, but WACO answered with runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to make it 3-2.
WACO picked up two more runs in the sixth inning, but in the top of the seventh, Summer Schrock hit in Jacayla Litwiller to tie the game up.
WACO was able to answer in the bottom of the inning, taking the 5-4 victory.
In the second game, WACO scored two runs in the first, but IMS plated five runs in the second inning, and then nine more in the third, ending the game with the 12-run rule.
“I think that it was time,” Wood said. “We had been hitting the ball well all season, just not in a gap, so they were getting a little frustrated. In the second game, we were minus a few players and people were in who weren’t normally in the varsity lineup, so I just told them to relax and have fun. They hit the ball like they were in practice and even better.”
Now IMS has momentum going into a doubleheader against Lone Tree on Thursday night. Games are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
