Iowa City Regina pulls away from IMS
WELLMAN — IMS junior Olivia Yutzy’s layup trimmed Iowa City Regina’s lead to 9-7 midway through the first quarter at Tuesday night’s Mid-Prairie Jamboree, but the Regals answered with a 15-1 run as they took control of the exhibition. Iowa City Regina went on to defeat IMS 36-12 in two quarters of play.
After Yutzy’s layup, IMS did not score another field goal for over 10 minutes. Yutzy finally broke the ice when she hit a jumper from the right wing with 2:13 left in the second quarter. IMS struggled with turnovers during the contest, coughing up the basketball 15 times in 16 minutes.
IMS also struggled to contend with Regal post players Megan Fackler, Jordyn Lehman and Hannah Stein, who combined to score 21 of Regina’s 36 points. The Regals, who finished 20-4 last season, also out-rebounded IMS 18-11.
Stein scored eight points to lead a balanced Regina attack, and Fackler had seven points. Lehman scored six points and grabbed four rebounds, and Cammy Verducci had five points.
Yutzy scored seven points to lead IMS. Junior Kristin Davis and sophomore Hannah Miller chipped in two points apiece. Sophomore Riley Schmieder pulled down six rebounds and scored one point.
IMS, which finished 5-19 last season, opens the regular season on Friday when it travels to Wapello for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division contest.
