Keith, Latcham lead Demons
KEOKUK — Sophomore Emelia Keith of the Washington girls’ cross-country team made all-conference at the Southeast Iowa Conference meet at Keokuk, Thursday with an eighth-place time of 16:46 in the 4K.
“Outstanding; I’m ecstatic — she got out with the top bunch and ran with them the whole way,” said head coach Steve Roth. “We had two of them up there but our freshman got tired and dropped off.”
Keith topped her personal-record time.
“I had 21 kids run; 18 of them had personal records,” Roth said. “They ran their best time.”
Freshman Mariah Howard placed 20th with a mark of 18:21.
The girls took fourth with 106 points.
Senior Austin Latcham paced the Washington boys with 16th-place finish and a time of 17 minutes and 53 seconds in the 5K. It was his personal records for both of them.
“That is what it is all about this time of year, running your best time,” Roth said.
“We talked about it at practice Wednesday night. The conference is tougher than nails. We can’t worry how a team places, we have to worry about ourselves.”
Junior Curtis Vest was right behind with a 17th-place finish and time of 17:56.
Freshman Owen Horak came in 20th with a mark of 18:18.
The Demons finished fourth with 110 points, 19 behind Fairfield.
