Photo by: Washington County 4-H CUTLINE (photo attached): Club leaders Jim Hotchkiss, Angie Sandburg, Doug Colbert, and Pam Davis were a team in the boat challenge. They engineered, measured, and tested their aluminum foil boat together. These materials are available for checkout from the Extension Office for 4-H club or other youth group use.

Iowa State University Extension’s 4-H and Clover Kid leaders from Washington County participated in a training March 6 where they learned how to put the Experiential Learning Model to work in their clubs. They experienced several different hands-on activities that used the “Do, Reflect, Apply” model of learning.

The highlight of the training was boat building and competing to see which boat design could float the most pennies. This activity could be used at the club level as it required team work and multiple STEM ideas and thinking. The most successful aluminum foil boat was able to float 200 pennies.
