Medical scholarship available to Washington student

The Washington Community School District, as Trustee, will be awarding the John L. and Anna R. Calkins Medical Scholarship with the anticipated distribution in the spring semester of 2013.

There may be one or more recipients of the scholarship. The amount or amounts of the scholarship is dependent upon the number of recipients and the earnings of the scholarship fund. The exact amount of this scholarship is not known.

To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must demonstrate the desire and potential to obtain a doctor of medicine degree (either an M.D. or D.O.). Students who will attend either a medical college or take pre-medical college work preparing for a doctor of medicine degree are eligible.

Students applying for this scholarship should have:

• a genuine interest in studying medicine

• a desire and commitment to serve the public

• intellectual ability

• ability to communicate and interact with others

• involvement with extracurricular activities

All recipients of the scholarship shall be graduates of Washington High School of Washington, unless the scholarship committee feels there is no such student who should receive the award, in which case a student who has graduated from Mid-Prairie High School, Highland High School, WACO High School or Keota High School may be selected to receive the scholarship. A student may be selected to receive the scholarship beyond their first year. A separate application must be completed for each year.

This year the completed applications must be signed by the applicant and received by the secretary of the Washington Community School District at the district office, 404 W. Main St., Washington, IA 52353 on or before Dec. 1, 2012. Application forms and information sheets will be available through the district central office. Please call 319-653-6543.
