Mid-Prairie board president resigns

By By Mary Zielinski And David Hotle | Mar 19, 2013

WELLMAN — Citing personal reasons, Mid-Prairie School Board president Randy Billups resigned his seat at the end of the regular school board meeting held March 11.
After the announcement, several of Billups’ fellow board members took the opportunity to thank him for his service on the board. Vice President Jim Hussey, who has served as president in the past, will take the position of president.
Superintendent Mark Schneider said today that the school board has 30 days to select a new board member. Hussy instructed the other board members to collect names of people interested in serving on the school board to bring to the March 25 meeting. He said the board can appoint someone at that meeting or just discuss the appointment and wait until the April 8 meeting to select a new member. He also said the board had the option of holding a special meeting to appoint a new member.
“Obviously the board can do what it wants, but in the past, the board has tried to select someone who either has served on the board before or someone who has run for the board and not been elected,” Schneider said.
During the last election, Jeremy Pickard of Kalona ran as a write-in candidate for the school board. Schneider said that he had wanted to run on the ballot, but had turned in his paperwork to the county auditor late.
Schneider said that in his 12 years as superintendent of Mid-Prairie, this is the first time he recalls a seated board president resigning. Billups had served on the board since being elected in 2005.
“Randy has been a great board member and we wish him all the luck in the future,” Schneider said.
