Mid-Prairie, Columbus Community face-off in dual

The Columbus Community and Mid-Prairie wrestlers faced off in a dual meet at Mid-Prairie on Tuesday, Jan. 14 with Iowa City Regina and Iowa Valley also participating in the event. The Wildcats made their presence felt on the mat against the Golden Hawks, winning the event 60.0 – 18.0.
“We’ve got a lot of good kids who work hard and practice well,” Columbus Community head coach Bill Plein said.
Columbus Community’s Josh Keller got the night started for the Wildcats at 106 pounds getting a 5-1 decision over Duncan McCain of Mid-Prairie. The Golden Hawks struck back at 113 pounds as Josh Murphy pinned the Wildcats’ Tanner Shellabarger in 0:23.
The 120-pound bout went to Mitchell Griffin of Columbus in one of the hardest fought matches of the evening. Griffin was eventually able to pin Mid-Prairie’s Blake Murphy after 5:31.
The Wildcats’ Johny Quinn kept the momentum going for Columbus Community at 132 pounds as he pinned the Golden Hawks’ Alec Ruch in 1:19. In the 145-pound bout, Austin Edwards of Columbus Community got an 8-2 decision over Visouth Peterschmidt of Mid-Prairie.
Mid-Prairie got back on the board when 160-pound Miguel Sanchez pinned Mauricio Ramirez from Columbus Community after 4:00 of tough wrestling.  The Wildcats then took the momentum right back in the 170-pound match with a pin of the Golden Hawks’ Eesaa Baylor in 3:46 by Tucker Morrison.
Mid-Prairie finished off this part of the dual with 182-pound Phirom Peterschmidt pinning Ricki Briones of Columbus Community in 0:28. The Wildcats got forfeits at 126 pounds, 138 pounds, 195 pounds, 220 pounds and 285 pounds to round out the night.
Columbus Community’s wrestlers then went on to face Iowa City Regina and had similar success, getting a 54.0 – 24.0 victory. The Wildcats’ Nick Bloomquist won by decision over Regina’s Mason Simpson 4-1 at 152 pounds, Morrison pinned Justin Hunter of Regina in 5:58. Columbus Community’s Mark Ramirez pinned Regina’s Payton Manske in 3:02 in the 195-pound bout. Jeremy Fox of Columbus Community followed suit at 220 pounds with a pin of Jarrod Brinkman of Regina in 5:27. Wildcat Josh Keller (106 pounds) won by decision over Regina’s TJ Schott 5-2. Regina then forfeited matches in five other weight classes.
Mid-Prairie improved its score against Iowa Valley but still came up on the short end, 54.0 – 27.0. Murphy got his second pin of the night, putting Josh Jordan’s (Iowa Valley) shoulders to the mat in 1:13. V. Peterschmidt won by a 7-1 decision over Iowa Valley’s Dylan Healey. Sanchez got another pin, this time over Jayson Krakow of Iowa Valley in 1:22. P. Peterschmidt took care of Iowa Valley’s Nathan Wardenburg, pinning him in 1:15. The Golden Hawks also got an Iowa Valley forfeiture at 106 pounds.
The most evenly matched pairing of the night was between Mid-Prairie and Iowa City Regina. V. Peterschmidt won by a 3-0 decision over Simpson, Sanchez pinned Regina’s Zachary Galindo in 2:09 and  P. Peterschmidt got the pin hat-trick by downing Regina’s Aaron Demory in 1:03. Both Mid-Prairie and Regina got three forfeitures. The 126-pound and heavyweight classes were recorded as double forfeitures, leading to a narrow 34.0 – 33.0 victory for the Golden Hawks.
