Mid-Prairie girls win home invitational
KALONA - The Mid Prairie girls’ golf team hosted their home invitational at the Kalona Golf Course on Friday, April 25. The six-team field included Mid-Prairie, West Liberty, Wilton, Durant, Regina and Fairfield.
The Golden Hawks posted an 18-hole team score of 385 strokes to win the event over Regina’s 412 strokes, West Liberty finished at 415, Durant 423, Fairfield with 426 and Wilton with 445.
Mid-Prairie sophomore Allyson Wertz was the meet medalist, winning in a sudden death playoff with Fairfield’s Lindsey Repp. Both golfers posted an 18-hole score of 90. Senior Sydney Scraff shot a 98. Senior Mick VanWinkle’s total was also 98. Senior Courtney Cayton came into the clubhouse at 103. Senior Laura Yoder’s scorecard showed a 104. Freshman Olivia Nisly completed the Mid-Prairie scoring with a 118.
“The girls played their best golf of the year today for sure. Allyson put together two really good 9-hole scores to earn meet medalist, even with some struggles with her putter today. Tee to green she played great, but she was really frustrated with the number of 3-putts and an occasional 4-putt that she had. That seemed to be a common theme throughout the event with all the players. I think the smooth, quick greens caught some of the kids off guard a little bit. Even for our team that plays the course daily, it took a little while for the girls to figure the speed out. With the RVC conference meet and Regionals right around the corner, the girls are putting themselves in a good place both with their physical and mental games to be successful. They made my job very easy today. The girls gave me a ringside seat to watch them play some really good golf, “ Mid-Prairie head coach Trace McArtor said.
The Mid-Prairie girls’ team hosts West Branch today, weather permitting.
