Middle school jazz bands compete
The Washington Middle School jazz bands performed at the SEIBA District Jazz Festival at West High in Iowa City on Saturday, March 8.
Jazz “A” performed “Satin Doll,” “Autumn Mist,” and “25 or 6 to 4.” Jazz “Z” performed “The Blues Walk,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” and “Frankenstein.”
Jazz “Z” earned third place in the Small School (Class A-3A) division and the following students received outstanding solo awards: Anthony Torres, Maggie Smith, Erik Murphy, Joe Patterson, Jeremiah Carter, Addison McGuire,Palmer Thomas, Matteo Hernandez, and Ellie Todd.
Jazz “A” performers were alto sax: Addison Six, Audrey Wubbena, Kylee McDonald, and Ben Baughman; tenor sax: Gwen Flannery, Aaron Harvey, and Kaytana Heimark. Trumpet: Hunter Roth, Ellie Todd, Olivia Pacha, & Allison Hippen; flute: Porscha McClanahan; clarinet: Mercedes German; trombones: Rory Wagner, Andrew Venenga, and Keith Zabel; bass guitar: Ben Schieffer; drums: Kiowa Keith and Matteo Hernandez; piano: Allison Plants and Kiowa Keith; and guitar: Matteo Hernandez and Isaac Gillispie.
Jazz “Z” performers were alto sax: Anthony Torres, Chase McDole, and Vanessa Diaz; tenor sax: Maggie Smith, Kaelyn McAvory, and Mallory Foster; Bari Sax: Taylor Wallerich; trumpet: Erik Murphy, Joe Patterson, Jeremiah Carter,and Ashley Dawson; flute: Mackenzie Beam and Addison McGuire; clarinet: Keira Gould and Grace Miller; trombones: Meredith Raber, George Guerra, Palmer Thomas, and Marshall Patterson; bass: Addison McGuire and Meredith Raber; drums: Landon Hinkley; and piano: Rio Lujano.
Both bands received a clinic following their performance.
