Mougin unseeded for NCAA Wrestling Championships
INDIANAPOLIS — The brackets for the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships were released yesterday, and Northern Illinois 174-pounder Matt Mougin will have a tough first-round matchup.
Mougin, a redshirt junior from Columbus Junction, will face No. 11 seed Blake Stauffer of Arizona State in the first round of the tournament. Stauffer, who is 22-3 on the season, was runner-up at the Pac 12 Championships after entering as the tournament’s top seed. Stauffer, a redshirt freshman from Neosho, Mo., also placed third at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and sixth at the Southern Scuffle.
Mougin, who is 22-15 on the season, is unseeded. He qualified for the NCAA Championships with his fifth-place finish at last weekend’s Mid-American Conference Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. It marks the 42nd straight season in which at least one Northern Illinois wrestler has advanced to the NCAA Championships and the first time that Mougin will move on to the national meet in his collegiate career.
The NCAA Championships, which will be held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, get started on Thursday, March 21 at 11 a.m. with the opening rounds and continue through the finals on Saturday, March 23. The entire tournament will be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks, starting with Thursday’s action on ESPN3 and continuing Friday on ESPNU.
