The ball is in the Washington Community Y’s court after the Washington City Council Wednesday returned an agreement for the Y to option the purchase of five acres on the site of the proposed Wellness Park. The Y had approached the city about the purchase, saying that the club is exploring the possibility of building a new Y facility on the land. During a special meeting, council member Bob Shellmyer had wanted the wording of the agreement to specify that the land will be used to build a facility. City attorney Craig Arbuckle said this is a major change and that it has to return to the Y board for approval. Council member Russ Zieglowsky voted against the agreement, saying that he has talked with several people who don’t want to see the Y move out of the downtown area and that he plans to vote ‘no’ throughout the process. The Y board is scheduled to meet Monday to hire an architect to study the options for expanding the space that the Y has. Once options are available, the Y plans to have public meetings to ask citizens what they want to happen. The city council will have a public hearing on the agreement during its Nov. 6 meeting.
